The goal is not to blast sound from one location. Instead, a properly designed system surrounds the space with evenly distributed sound.

Speakers

Outdoor speakers are placed strategically throughout the space. These may include mounted speakers, landscape speakers, or hidden designs.

The key is spacing — multiple smaller speakers placed correctly will always outperform a few loud ones.

Subwoofers

Subwoofers provide low-frequency bass. Outdoors, bass fades quickly, so subwoofers are essential for a full sound.

Without a subwoofer, outdoor audio will always sound thin and incomplete.

Amplifier

The amplifier powers the system and balances output across all speakers. It ensures clean sound and proper performance at all volume levels.

Control & Source

Most systems are controlled by phone apps, Wi-Fi streaming, or Bluetooth for simpler setups.

How Outdoor Audio Wiring Works

One of the most important and overlooked parts of any outdoor audio system is the wiring.

All speakers are connected back to an amplifier using outdoor-rated wire. This wiring is carefully routed through the property and buried underground.

Wire Routing

  • Wires are typically run along landscaping edges, fences, or hardscape lines
  • Hidden from view for a clean installation
  • Designed to avoid high-traffic and future damage areas

Burial Methods

  • Direct burial rated wire is used
  • Wires are placed below surface level (typically 6–12 inches)
  • In some cases, conduit is used for added protection

Protection & Materials

  • Gravel or sand may be used to protect wiring in certain areas
  • Wire paths are planned to avoid sharp rocks or roots
  • Connections are weather-sealed to prevent moisture issues

A clean wiring installation is just as important as the equipment itself.

Why Speaker Placement Matters

Instead of placing speakers in one area, a proper system spreads them evenly across the space.

This eliminates hot spots (too loud) and dead zones (too quiet).

Even coverage at lower volume always sounds better than loud uneven sound.
