Professional Rubbing Compound To use, apply a 5-inch ribbon of the buffer compound to the pad. Then set the speed of your buffer to medium or medium-high. Start slowly, resting the pad on the surface of the vehicle without adding any pressure. You should only be using the weight of the machine. Work in small sections at a time, overlapping your buffing path as you go to ensure you cover the paint thoroughly. Apply more of the compound as needed to keep the surface wet at all times. When you’re done buffing, use a clean damp towel to wipe it clean. Inspect the results to ensure there are no defects. If there are, continue with the buffer until they are removed.
