Upgrade Your Ride with Wide Open Sound

What Are IP Waterproof Ratings, and Why Do They Matter for Your Audio Equipment?

When you're shopping for audio gear for your motorcycle, boat, or UTV, you'll see terms like "waterproof" thrown around a lot. But not all "waterproof" claims are created equal, and that's where IP ratings come in.

So, What’s an IP Rating?
IP ratings (short for Ingress Protection) are a standardized way of showing how well a product is protected from two things:

  1. Dust and Dirt: The first number in the rating tells you how much protection there is against solid stuff like dirt, sand, or mud (important for UTVs and motorcycles).
    • A "6" means it's completely dust-tight—nothing is getting in there!

  1. Water: The second number shows how well it can handle water. This goes from basic splash resistance to full-on submersion.
    • A "7" means it can be submerged in water up to about 3 feet for 30 minutes.
    • A "9K" means it can handle high-pressure jets of water, perfect for cleaning or rough weather conditions.

For example, if you see IP67, it means the product is completely dust-proof and can handle being dunked underwater for short periods. Perfect for a boat or side-by-side that’s going to see a lot of water and grime.

Why Are IP Ratings Better Than Just Saying 'Waterproof'?

Let’s be honest—"waterproof" is a vague term. Does it mean the product can handle a splash? Rain? Dunking it in a lake? IP ratings take the guesswork out of it by telling you exactly what to expect. Here’s why they matter:

  1. You Know What You’re Getting:
If you're riding your motorcycle in the rain, an IP65-rated speaker will be fine. But if you’re planning to mount it on a jet ski or a boat, you’ll want something more like IP67 or higher to handle full-on water exposure.
  2. Real-World Testing:
IP ratings are backed by strict testing. They’re not just marketing buzzwords—they mean the product has been proven to handle tough conditions.
  3. It Matches Your Lifestyle:
Whether you're tearing through muddy trails in your UTV, cruising down the highway on your bike, or navigating rough seas in your boat, IP ratings help you pick gear that can handle your adventures.
  4. Peace of Mind:
No one wants to invest in a sound system only to have it fail because it couldn’t handle the elements. With IP-rated equipment, you’ll know it’s built for the environment you’re in.
